I believe that every great image tells an emotionally engaging and complex human story.
My work on House of the Dragon and The Last of Us garnered me Emmy, BAFTA and ASC-Award nominations for Best Cinematography. Before moving into large-scale episodic television, I built my career shooting award-winning independent features and documentaries, and was honored to be named one of American Cinematographer magazine’s Rising Stars of Cinematography.
I approach my work with a unique combination of technical precision and emotional instinct. In high school, physics was my best subject and dancing was my favorite past-time. At university, I discovered filmmaking satisfied both the right and left sides of my brain perfectly. Every creative decision I make starts with the script, and I love collaborating with directors and fellow department heads to create images that deepen character, serve the story and shape the audience’s emotional experience.
My leadership style is equally collaborative because I feel people give their best to a project when they feel creatively engaged with the material. I treat people as I would like to be treated: with compassion and respect. I have an incredible work ethic and I like to laugh, so I run my sets the same way – with focus and a smile.
I was recently profiled in Emmy magazine. You can read the in-depth interview here.
As a passionate champion of equity and inclusion in the industry, I’m a founding member of illuminatrix – a collective of female cinematographers in the UK.
In addition to being a cinematographer, I’m a French-speaker, a dog-lover, a tap-dancer, and a big fan of classic musicals.
I go by Katie, Catherine, Schmidty, hey you… just please not Cathy!
